40 Years In Business The Ferguson Park Garage History
Fred Pedan McCabe, started a coal business and opened the old garage in the summer of 1894, this business ran until 1957, then sold the
coal business and developed a haulage business with his brother.
They ran the business until February 1971 when Freds son went into the mechanical business. Derek worked for SMT for 7 years where he
served his time as a mechanic.
He left there in 1967 and worked for Scottish and Newcastle brewers and then going on to open his own business as DL McCabe in feb 1971.
In may of 1972 Fred sold the haulage business to work for his son as a motor engineer Fred continued to work at the garage until 1988 when he
retired age 74.
He passed away on boxing day 1990. Meanwhile Derricks son Calum started his apprenticeship with his dad and grandad in January of 1987.
Calum and his dad worked together in the old garage on heavy commercial motors until 1997.
In July of that year father and son built and moved into the new garage they built next to the old garage which still stands today. Calum
finished his apprenticeship in 1991.
Father and son continued to develop the business as the business became more successful they introduced a MOT station. Then they brought
in son Liam to learn the trade in 2005, Liam now a fully trained mechanic continues to work at the garage with his father and grandad just
like old times.
Derrick is now training his grandson Jordan who joined the garage in 2009.
In November 2010 Laura, Calums wife, also joined the family strong business looking after the reception and taking things into the future.
Laura is also a fully trained mechanic is excited about the future of the business being family run for 40 years now.
Laura has won a modern apprenticeship award being the only female ever to do so, then the following year done it again. She is not just the
only female to have achieved this but the only person to have achieved 2 years in a row.
Our garage is a family run business we have the past, the present, and the future all in one garage which is amazing when you think of
businesses today.
Derrick will celebrate his 40 year anniversary in February this year 2011.
